Somnvs Mortis – El Advenimiento de las Pesadillas Perpetuas (2019)

Somnvs Mortis
Release date: July 13th, 2019
Label: Darkness & Evil Records

I should have wrote this review ages ago, but I suppose it’s never too late for some shameless self promotion, since this was the first release of a new label I started last year to help promote some interesting projects.

But let’s talk about what matters here, wich is the band and their music. El Advenimiento de las Pesadillas Perpetuas is the first official release of Somnvs Mortis, a side project of EV (who plays guitars in the killer Death Metal band Exanimatvm) and Hermes (drummer of another very prolific local Death Metal band called Infernal Doom) with JV on vocal duties. They play some straight forward Black Metal, influenced by the classic scandinavian acts of the early 90’s. Nothing new, you might think, but this guys really know what they are doing, and their work has quality enough to not be dismissed as the 666th clone of Mayhem that ever walked the earth.

Cayendo en el Sueño Morturio serves as the intro for the EP, and immediatelly you get suck into it’s ominous atmosphere and as the track unfolds you get the feeling that something dark and sinister is coming. And yes, from the start of Somnvs Mortis you will notice some somber and hypnotic riffs, and a lot of diversity on Hermes’ drumming. The guy is quite a resourceful drummer and not just a blast beat machine. And JV’s vocals might not leave you in shock & awe, but his style fits the music very well as he describes the horrors produced by Ayayema, the entity that haunted the Selk’nam people in their dreams. Another important thing is that even when this track is quite long (08:34) it doesn’t get boring or monotonous at all.

Donde Yace lo Inconcebible starts with a faster pace, and the bass has a lot more presence here. The song is basically divided in three parts, starting with high intensity and a frantic pace, then the middle section is darker and slower, and then after a great rythm change the final part ends on a high again. After that, the tranquillity of the outro Sombrías Visiones Oníricas will help you recover from the head pounding that you have been withstanding for the previous 15 minutes.

To wrap things up, Somnvs Mortis crafted a great debut cimented on some very good songwriting, good riffs, great drumming and an overall powerful and sombre atmosphere. And yes, I’m bias, but don’t take my word for it, go and listen to this for yourself and make your own opinion. And if you happen to like this, then go get a copy of the re-release that Oratorium Records put out recently. This new version includes a great cover of Funeral Fog as bonus track, so act fast, before it’s sold out again.

Ad Finem Omnia – Demo MMXX (2020)

Ad Finem Omnia
Release date: May 31st, 2020
Label: Independent

Well here we go with the first demo from Ad Finem Omnia and like I said earlier this year, made up by a few members of Sol Sistere and this something you might want to hear as this is pure black metal in the old school way.

From this first track Widespread Destruction you know we are in for something and this lives up to its title with some great lyrics that are to the point and the music is just as good. an excellent opener, The Abyss has a bit of a more complex feel to it but it drives the aggression is there for those who can’t get enough the drumming is as good as it gets, this really has a powerful punch that kills! One break on here really set the light something you need to hear to know what I’m talking about.

Pitch Black is up there with the rest with some deep lyrics that a lot can relate to that made this even more pleasurable and with a total aggression the way I like it so no slowing down to this point and the closer Abolish God the first track that we got a taste of earlier this year and hear it sounds just as good as ever and still one of the best tracks the band has released to end this great demo.

I’m sure that this will catch the eye of the underground as its got what it needs to spread this excellent sound the band is delivering to us, I highly recommend this.

Ecologist – Río Loncomilla: Abandonado a las mareas de la pestilencia humana (2020)

Release date: March 24th, 2020
Label: Independent

Here is a Atmospheric Black Metal project of a man that simply goes under the name V, this caught my attention because of what the message that is being brought here and by the title this is dedicated to the Loncomilla river in the Maule region of Chile and what this sick world has done to this glorious place and I have done my research and I know exactly what the point is here.

So this EP just contains two tracks and both are lengthy and both are totally different as Las raíces que decaen is the track that got me wanting to hear more as it has this great feel to it as it roars through with such a intense drive the drums just have this going and the great guitar work even the breaks do this justice, for a track that is a bit over ten minutes it has not a single dull moment, you seriously need to check this out.

Like I mentioned both tracks are very different and Abandonar del espíritu is something more, but you have to understand what the message that is trying to come across here and by the title I can surely respect what the point is. the vocals add to it as they are dark with feeling that actually made is even more enjoyable.

I was amazed on how good the production is on here, I surely hope to hear more from this as it hit a spot in me.

1879 – Sangre Barbarie y Honor (2020)

Release date: March 31st, 2020
Label: Independent

Hell yes! with all the shit going on in the world at the moment 1879 releases a free download of their latest work and as I was told by the band this will get a physical release as soon as all the shit happening has ended but for those that don’t know about the band they play Black Metal which concentrates more on History,Hate and War in their lyrics as 1879 was the year the War of the Pacific started against Bolivia and Peru and ended up winning a few years later.

So let’s get to this, here we have 10 tracks one being an instrumental and I knew what to expect from the band as I have heard the earlier releases but this full length has been something I have waited on and others as well.Fuego Cruzado opens this off and straight from the lyrics we are off to war as this is pretty straight forward to the point as everybody is going off on here as the vocals are your typical black death vocals but with there own character to them which got me into the mood of what’s to come. Embestida de la Muerte ah yes the intro takes us back to that time with a war feeling but then the band comes in and we are going in for the kill! you could say as this one is out to kill the enemy! tons of heavy bust your balls pounding here as this is more like the earlier material I heard excellent track!

Artillería Letal, you want a fast one well this one’s for you as here all guns come a blazing as this feeds off hatred as it should fuck the drums are pounding on here like a machine gun, a true headbasher here this will kill your ass, fucking brutal! even the hard pounding riffage at the end tops it off.Marcha Lenta hacia la Muerte is a bit different as its heavy kinda doomy at the start as the tale is about the troops crossing the desert and the sound works but this gets heavy as fuck as it goes along so you can picture what this is about a very killer track as this has a lot of flare to it that made it very enjoyable from start to finish as it goes into the instrumental Desolación del Desierto which is basically the bass guitar and sounds perfect for the title and theme of what’s going on here.

And we get back into the madness on Demencia Guerra y Alcohol and this rips as it’s a celebration of the Chilean troops taking control and fucking women and drinking as it was meant to be as the track is solid piece of torture, as we get back into the action on Carne de Cañon and is another hard bashing track with its own life to it some tempo changes that really make it interesting as this one shines as well, the guitar on here is off the wall with some killer riffs that need to be heard a good one no doubt.Fosa Comun, Fosa de la Gloria is more on a slower tempo as it tells more of the dark side of the war and more different than the rest on here but it packs a punch in its own right as the ending brings more light to it.

As we get near the end Himnos de Guerra is one of those tracks that is out to make a point this has that pounding kinda riffage at the start that goes with the lyrics telling you a tale as it goes on it gets even heavier as the drums take control and song even gets heavier as it goes on and shines even more towards the end, as I liked it more after a few listens but this closer Sobre el Palacio De los Virreyes is the final nail in the coffin as this claims victory and the music and lyrics here are filled with Chilean pride as this is what this band is about, the track cuts at a point as you hear these waves of the ocean playing and then the drums come back and all hell breaks loose as this must be a hidden track that ends this on a total high as the duel vocal sound here adds to the glory.

Fuck! this is good shit and can’t wait til its released, but you can get it here but support the band and buy the physical copy when it comes out.

Invocation – Attunement to Death (2020)

Release date: February 21st, 2020
Label: Iron Bonehead Productions

So the wait is over, I say that because I will admit I have followed this band since the beginning and always knew they would do some damage on their journey and this new EP is a pure smasher as it got me on the first spin.

As they have their trademark sound and on this has gone to a different level and it shows after this little opener Oppression we get down to business as Flying Ointments comes in and you hear the band going off as good as ever, this track has all the goods you would want if you know what I mean, the crushing riffage they deliver is all there so were off to a trip as the vocals of Sense of Premonition are there for the calling. the pounding on here is to tear your ass off!

Divine Transition is up next and the long track but fuck man. I love how these tracks come in on here, they just fade in to the groove but into it this is a headbanger of a track the pounding of the drums and the riffage oh my is this shit good and with its macabre sounding part it comes out to get you, a sure brain crusher of a track! I fuckin love it.

But it gets better than ever on The First Mirror as this is pure punishment at full tilt as here we get a flare that the band is out to kill! excellent vocals and sick as fuck and the music has a bit of everything good all the different tempos on here are fucking killer! one of the best tracks on here.

So we go onto the track The Officiants which was circulating around since the news of this release was mentioned and from the first hear you knew what to expect, this rules! by no account it delivers and shows what the band was going to deliver us and it was right to the point! So we go onto this closer Secret Tongues and this is to me my favorite track as everything the band wants to put in your brain is here that hypnotic sound they deliver is at its full glory the pounding parts on here just brought this so energizing feel to it that it brought this whole thing to a fantastic end a hell of a release!

Do I recommend, hell yeah! one of the best releases of the year that needs to be spread worldwide, these fuckers know what they are doing so get out there and support.

Cenotafio – Larvae Tedeum Teratos (2019)

Release date: November 20th, 2019
Label: Apocalyptic Productions

Here is this two man band that I been waiting for to release a new full length that pretty much killed me as they have this unique sound to their Black/Death Metal that just grabs a hold of your ass, so I was thrilled of the news of this release.

With only four tracks a full length you may ask well these are some long tracks just like the first one but fuck it they won’t bore you at all instead take you on a ride you will likely want to take again and again.

Just as La Apoptosis opens this up with this eerie sound that sets the mood and then the haunting riffs and these vocals from hell that just fit the mold perfectly, as I was reading the lyrics they are in spanish on this whole opus but they don’t really make a difference they sound like a fucking demon screaming from hell that actually don’t make a difference, this is some powerful shit here and for being the opening track and long it flew buy as it has this great atmosphere to it, a fucking excellent opener to this.

El Martirio, oh hell what brilliance this comes out like a storm on hells wings this is what I love a pure kick in the ass, this track will obliterate you, even when it slows down it’s still kicking ass as the vocals are sick as hell the screams the blast beats make you wanna kill somebody and that’s only half way then we get some lead that will surely pleasure you, then the sounds of torment that is expected with the title, this fucking rules!

A bit of a change up on La Sentencia y la Plaga, well as this has a more deep slower pace to it but the sickening growels keep it interesting as later we get these blast beats that wake your ass up, not as intense as the previous but still a smasher of a track that leads to Maleficae and here this one has a black metal vibe at the beginning due to the riff but then it captures the brilliance this band offers but its a long one with a lot of killer vibes, the drums are pounding like hell on here and the interesting breaks with the guitar stand out, like I mentioned its long but near the end it really has a excellent punch to it as it fades away with some interesting sounds you need to hear to understand.

In closing this is a killer release if you like deep underground metal with balls this a must have in my book a band that needs more exposure no doubt as this will take down the weak,go out and support and buy a copy.

LvxCaelis – Maher Shalal Hash Baz (2019)

Release date: October 31st, 2019
Label: Lamech Records

The name of LvxCaelis should not be unknown at this point to anyone who has been paying attention to the chilean scene for the last decade. Maher Shalal Hash Baz is their third album, and it comes four years after their magnificent previous record The Watchers. I’ve been listening to this Black Metal piece regularly for the past month since I received my copy of the CD, and I must say that my expectations were vastly exceeded by the quality of the songs.

The sound of the recording is very similar to what can be heard in the previous album, with the main difference being the overall atmosphere of the songs. While The Watchers had a more ominous and ritualistic feeling, Maher Shalal Hash Baz is more intense, more direct, maybe more “Metal” should I say. The drumming is frantic and relentless, but also has a lot of variety, the razor sharp guitars blend aggressive riffs with dark melodies, the bass rumbles in the background adding that extra layer of thickness and heavyness to the songs, and the ominous solemnity of the vocals fit perfectly with the music.

Every song has something interesting to offer, from the catchiness of Beyond the Falling Stars, to the insane intensity of Fading into Golgotha, to the hypnotic opening riff in Throne of Doom (plus the overall slower but powerful pace of the song), or the masterful rithm changes in The Beginning was the End, or that awesome and classic cold riff after the first verses in Kiss the Skull.

Raising above the Demiurge caught me completely by surprise with the almost Heavy Metal-esque guitar leads in the final part of the song, and the tasteful mixture of rawness and melancholy in Awakening the Final Chaos gives the album a perfect closure (those bass lines are pure brilliance).

The lyrics, as usual, deal with topics regarding luciferian gnosis and the neverending quest for illumination to free one self from the boundaries and limitations of the earthly existence.

The album was recorded at Lamech Studios in Sweden by Deacon D (Hetroertzen) who also contributes with some vocals in the last song, Awakening the Final Chaos, plus the intro, outro and some interludes. The artwork was done by Åskväder (also from Hetroertzen). As you would expect from Lamech Records, the overall production and design of the album are top notch.

To sum things up, Maher Shalal Hash Baz is a more than worthy successor of The Watchers. It might be even better, but I’m still undecided about that, need to listen to it more. There’s a lot to be discovered in the 37 minutes of music contained here, but I highly recommend this to anyone who’s looking for quality music.

Sanctum Sathanas – Xanthosis (2019)

Sanctum Sathanas
Release date: November 1st, 2019
Label: Vestigia Flamæ

Some Black Metal up this time and here is a band that if your into that raw old school feeling when it comes to this genre you should check this out as this EP is right on, its been awhile since their first demo but this EP was worth the wait.

We get 5 tracks of pure blasphemy hailing Lucifer himself as M.O.S (Nigredo) opens this ritual up we get right into it with a ferocious yell and the band just rips into it with a crushing sound that defines what you will get with this release, the vocals are your typical black metal which as you know most fuckers won’t understand but fuck it! if it works just do it but believe me this track has all the qualities you want.

More insanity on Tubal Qayin (Manifestación Ancestral), this is just pure brutality I was floored on this one what a fucking masterpiece! this is BM the way I like it! no remorse here the riffing on here is so intense and this is a long track with a few tempo changes but all killing at full force. Maestro Irreflexivo (Azerate) and the killing doesn’t stop with a nice old school riff to open it up it goes into a deep stage of mayhem that just blew my mind ! was floored by this one, the pounding drums on here are intense as the whole track is actually.

A bit of a change on Ordo ab Chaos (Kaosulvens) as its got a more heavy riff on opening but a good one as there is no wimping out here and later on it hits a full tilt as we get what the band has been delivering all out this opus so no let down at all I fucking love it! Xeper I Apep closes this out and again with a mid tempo and some strange vocal yells not heard throughout this which made it interesting but it gets back into pure insanity to close it out on a high note.

Fuck! this is excellent one of the best black metal releases of the year without hesitation, this is as good as it gets in my book, the band has no page which is good by me, keep this gem underground and only available from the label.

Oldeath – Born Between All Death (2019)

Release date: November 9th, 2019
Label: Oratorivm Records

Here is a new band on the scene and remember the name Oldeath because this first demo is pretty impressive as it has an old school vibe to it.

Unholy Profanation opens this up and I was impressed by the sound as they are labeled as a Black metal band but there sound has more of a kick to it as like I said before old school is written all over this first track, the vocals are definitely on the dark side and will grip you but the music is excellent as it has these great hooks to it, I was quite surprised on how good this is and the cringing lead that sounds like an echo from hell and a nice ending as well.

So on to this next one Involuntary Blasphemer which keeps up the good vibe, I’m hearing as this doesn’t disappoint either and the vocals are heard crystal clear here and sick, by the way the drumming on here adds to the goods, fantastic job as they put the drive into this track, up next Celestial Massacre and with a bassline opening this of the four tracks I had to hear a few times before it finally set in and it will grab you no doubt as its got this really good pace to it with a pounding break to ad to the flare but gets back to its drive but it has another break in it as this is quite a long track compared to the others so there is a lot going on here.

Time to Die closes this out and it’s a good one with a great spoken part full of hate just the way it should be and will leave you wanting more as it comes and goes that fast, I would recommend giving this a listen as the band play black metal with their own style to it and it will grab you.

This was just re released by Oratorivm Records on tape and only 100 copies were made so get a hold of them for a copy.
